On Saturday, February 29th, Hug High Senior Jacqueline Portnell placed third in Nevada’s Poetry Out Loud district semi-finals at the Nevada Art Museum. Organized by the Holland Project, Poetry Out Loud is a recitation contest where students are required to memorize two poems then perform them. This year, there were 20 students from high schools all across Washoe County who came to perform their poems. Representing Hug this year were students Jason Cruz and Jacqueline Portnell. Cruz performed Gerard Manely Hopkins’ “This Windhover” and Blas Manuel de Luna’s “Bent to the Earth.”  Portnell performed Anne Bradstreet’s “The Author to Her Book” and Paul Muldoon’s “The Hedgehog.” Students are judged physical presence, voice/articulation, dramatic appropriateness, evidence of understanding, and overall performance.
