Hug Hawks Mock Trial Heads to State Competitions

Our Hug Hawks Mock Trial team won 2nd place in the Northern Nevada Mock Trial Competition and is now on its way to state competitions in Las Vegas on Friday. The team competed Friday, February 28 and beat out 6 other teams to end up 2nd in the competition, losing out only to the team from Reno High School.

The competition was broken down into 3 rounds in last Friday’s competition, in which all 9 members of the team fought hard and long, with each round lasting around 2 hours. They argued against another team over a simulated court case that each team has spent months researching and preparing for, to give the case to a jury of lawyers.

The competition itself is broken down like a real court case: the opening statements of each side, a repeating series of direct-examinations and cross-examinations for each prosecution witness, repeated 3 times for the defense witnesses, ending the trial with closing statements.

When asked about the competition, one member said “Yeah, it was really fun! I enjoyed being there, even if the standing got to be a bit much at times. I would do it again in a heartbeat at state, and hopefully next year as well.” The member spoke on the numerous challenges they faced, such as memorizing their speeches and questions, but in the end, said that they hope to be able to have a similar showing at state. Specifically, the member is aiming for at least beating the law-based high school, Bishop Gorman, down in Las Vegas.

The Hug Mock Trial team has been working hard for 4 years, unfortunately, coming up just short of state competitions their first year, but going beyond the next 2 years, making it to state both years and taking first place in last year’s competition. This year will serve as the ultimate sendoff for the Seniors in the club, making a mark on their future lives.

The members of the team are:  Ana Delgadillo, Joseph Listinsky, Kate HB, Jacqueline Portnell, Christopher Seifert, Hannalea Weinzweig, Devin Cochran, Jonathan Chatham, Fiona Maclucas.
